The foot

¡Viva la vida!

I haven’t been able to do anything strenuous since Saturday morning, all thanks to an encounter with the ocean on Friday. I was at the beach with the dogs when a wave taller than me hit full force, knocked me down, and slammed a rock hard against my foot. It stung, but I brushed it off.

Later that afternoon, I even went on a mountain bike ride to Nacapule. There was some discomfort, but nothing prepared me for what was coming. I went to bed Friday night planning to climb Tetakawi with the dogs the next morning, only to wake up at 2:00 AM with a violently swollen, throbbing foot.

Things went downhill from there. It isn’t broken, but the swelling made sleeping almost impossible—it felt like my foot had its own heartbeat, and even light contact against the skin was painful. Zahira came by Saturday night with medicine (¡muchas gracias!), and while the laughs were great, the constant throbbing never let up.

Everyone was worried by Sunday morning, but having had foot injuries like this before, I knew it just needed time. My dad lent me a loose pair of sandals since my Chacos were way too tight, which has been a lifesaver. The swelling has already gone down about 40%, and I have much more mobility in my toes now.

Yesterday, I tested the foot on a quick ride to my parents’ house. The downstroke hurt, but pedaling is doable. For now, I’m switching from snug cycling shoes to regular hiking shoes with platform pedals until the swelling clears up entirely.

The dogs are thoroughly unimpressed with being cooped up since Saturday, but if healing keeps going at this rate, we should be back at the beach by Thursday.

In the meantime, enjoy the gross injury photos—plus a shot of the actual wave that took me out.
