2 Minutes of Wet Dogs: My High-Tide Sea Cave Trek with Kuma and Lucia

If you’ve ever explored the stunning coastline of San Carlos, you already know that its rugged volcanic cliffs and crystal-clear waters are an adventurer's paradise. But for me, the best journeys are the ones shared with my favorite four-legged companions. Today, Kuma, Lucia, and I headed out for a refreshing, high-energy trek through the reefs and hidden sea caves right here in our backyard.

Shaking Things Up at High Tide

The adventure began where the desert dramatically meets the Sea of Cortez. Under a bright, warm Sonoran morning, the water was an incredible shade of turquoise, so clear you could see right down to the volcanic stone reef below.

The tide was high today, which made navigating the shoreline a bit more of a challenge—and a lot more fun. Kuma and Lucia didn't hesitate for a second. They expertly waded and splashed through the deeper water, managing the rolling waves breaking against the base of the towering cliffs like absolute pros.

Swimming into Hidden Sea Caves

As we moved along the shoreline, the true magic of the coast revealed itself: a series of magnificent, wave-carved sea caves. I call the big cave Kuma's Cave.

Stepping into the cool shade of these overhanging cliffs offered an instant, refreshing break from the heat. With the high tide filling the cave, things got a little deep. While Lucia confidently hiked right into the edge of the cavern, Kuma preferred to hold his ground on a submerged ledge. I had to give him a little hoist over a few deep-water gaps, but that's what teamwork is all about.

A High-Energy Finish on the Beach

After a bit of cave exploration, the pups scrambled up onto a rocky outcrop, shaking off the saltwater and taking in the panoramic views of the open ocean.

To top off the perfect morning, we rounded the bend to La Posada beach. Free from the rocks and the deep water, the dogs took off at a full sprint, chasing each other across the wet sand as the waves rolled in—the perfect end to this morning's coastal trek.

My Top Tips for Exploring the San Carlos Coast with Pups:

  • Check the Tides: High tide means deeper water and less dry land to walk on. Be prepared to get wet, and make sure your dogs are comfortable swimmers.

  • Watch Their Paws: The volcanic rock can be sharp and barnacle-crusted. Keep a close eye on your dog's pads and guide them toward smoother stone paths when possible. Kuma's paws are in great shape - roughed up from walking on barnacles, rough gravel, and Tetakawi (which we'll be climbing again). Lucia's paws are getting there. I do use an ointment for dogs' paws to soothe the cracks.

  • Fresh Water is Key: Swimming in the ocean is thirsty work. Once we get home, they drink lots of fresh water. I keep a bucket ready in the front patio and their regular water dish in the kitchen. They drink sea water, and cannot be trained not to.
